Kampen om 3 pladsen
Danmark v Namibia
Namibia vandt med 4 stående
Once again, Freddie Klokker won the toss and elected to bat
in the 3rd/4th place play-off match against Namibia at
Gemsbokpark, Windhoek. He and Mickey Lund started brightly
against opening bowlers, Gerrie Snyman and Matheus van Zyl,
with 44 coming from the first 10 overs. Kola Burger and Deon
Kotze replaced Snyman and van Zyl and with the score on 75
Klokker was bowled by Burger for 43 (from 58 deliveries). 5
overs later Mickey Lund was caught by Raymond van Schoor off
the bowling of Kotze to leave Danmark on 91 for after 22
overs. A stand built between Carsten Pedersen and Max
Overgaard until Overgaard was caught and bowled by Michel
Durand for 19 in the 32nd over. Unfortunately wickets began
to fall regularly – including the run outs of Bobby Chawla
and Morton Hedegaard after top-scoring Carsten Pedersen had
been adjudged LBW in Deon Kotze’s second spell. It was left
to Thomas Hansen (28 not out from 29 deliveries) and David
Borchersen (15 from 8 deliveries) to lift Danmark’s total to
a slightly disappointing 220 for 8 from their 50 overs.
Nonetheless a vastly improved batting performance against
the hosts.
Namibia’s hard-hitting batsmen soon got into their stride
and, although they had lost three wickets, 77 had been
scored by the time that David Botha joined Gerrie Snyman for
what proved to be a match winning partnership. Over 100 runs
came from the next 18 overs before Bobby Chawla had Snyman
caught by Henrik Hansen on the long-on boundary for 71 (from
68 deliveries). Namibia now needed just 41 runs from the
next 20 overs. Although they lost the further wickets of
Botha and Louis van der Westhuizen, the Danmark total was
passed in the 42nd over.
By finishing 4th, Danmark have now qualified for the World
Cup qualifiers in Dubai in April 2009. Congratulations are
due to both the players and the training team of Peter Palle
Klokker and Neil Foster. This is an excellent achievement
for a team that up to 3 months ago looked doomed to face a
further qualifying tournament. There is still much to be
done in the next 15 months but so long as the team morale
remains high.

Danmark qualify – but make it difficult for themselves
Danmark won the toss on a hot sunny morning at Wanderers
CC and elected to field. David Borchersen gained an early
breakthrough by having Bernardo Irigoyen LBW in his first
over. Pablo Ferguson and opener Matias Paterlini had little
trouble against Borchesen and fellow opening bowler Thomas
Hansen and kept the score ticking over until the 14th over
when Carsten Pedersen took an excellent catch in the gully
to dismiss Ferguson. South African born Gary Savage joined
Paterlini and both struggled against the tight bowling of
Morten Hedegaard who conceded just 7 runs in his 6 over
spell and Borchersen who finished with 2 for 29 from his
allotted 10 overs. The dangerous Paterlini who had
previously scored an unbeaten century against Namibia was
trapped LBW by Bobby Chawla. Thereafter wickets fell
regularly and it was only a spirited 31 in 27 balls by
Martin Siri that lifted the score to 168 all out in 48.2
overs. Danmark had bowled their overs at a decent rate and
as the Argentina innings had closed with more than 30
minutes to go before the scheduled lunch interval, Danmark’s
batsmen faced a tricky 24 minute session before lunch.
Meanwhile the news coming from the Uganda – Namibia match
was not good. Namibia had been dismissed for just 148 runs.
Both Namibia and Uganda had far superior net run rates to
Danmark and a win for Uganda would leave all three teams
with two wins – and relegate Danmark to the play-ff for
5th/6th place. By so doing they would face yet another
qualifying tournament in January 2009.
The need to improve their net run rate probably influenced
the decision to change the normal batting order, a ploy that
very nearly misfired. Carsten Pedersen and big-hitting David
Borchersen came out to face the Argentinian opening attack.
Unfortunately Borchersen skied his second ball from Gary
Savage and the catch was easily pouched by the ’keeper.
Worse was to come. Pedersen edged medium-pacer Esteban Nino
to the ‘keeper to leave Danmark 24 for 2 wickets at lunch.
Argentina ‘keeper Alejandro Ferguson completed his ‘hat
trick’ soon after lunch when he dived wide to his right to
take a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Lars
Hedegaard.
Mickey Lund came out to join skipper Freddie Klokker and the
usual opening pair steadied the ship by adding 82 in 23
overs until Lund became the ’keepers fourth victim. To his
credit Lund ‘walked’ for a catch standing up to the wicket
from the bowling of the off-spinning Argentina captain
Esteban (‘Billy’) MacDermott. Freddie Klokker soon followed,
bowled by Nino for 54 from 97 deliveries. 43 runs were now
required from 12.4 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Johan
Malcolm-Hansen and Thomas Hansen added a further 20 runs
before Malcolm-Hansen was adjudged LBW to Nino. There was to
be one final twist. With the scores level, Moten Hedegaard
hit medium-pacer Paterlini straight to Diego Lord at
extra-cover. There was great relief as Thomas Hansen tucked
a full toss from Pedro Bruno through mid-wicket for a
single.
By beating Argentina by 3 wickets, Danmark have achieved
their aim and qualified for the ICC World Cup Qualifier (formerly
the ICC Trophy) to be held in the United Arab Emirates in
April 2009.

Rawson: Denmark throw away a promising start
Although Mickey Lund was run out for 14 with the score on
30, Denmark continued at nearly 6 runs per over with both
Freddie Klokker and Carsten Pedersen scoring freely. The
tempo of the innings changed when Carsten Pedersen was
unfortunately run out for 37. Freddie Klokker soon followed,
stumped off the bowling of Tariq Hussein with the score on
106 after 20.2 overs. Wickets then fell regularly until
Denmark were all out for 168 after 43.3 overs. A poor score
such as this was never going to seriously test the Omani
batsmen – and so it proved.

Carsten Pedersen i aktion mod Oman ©ICC
Although Thomas Hansen took a wicket in his second over, he
was far too expensive and was taken off after just three
overs having conceded 32 runs. Henrik Hansen had fared no
better; he was taken off after conceding 17 runs in 2 overs.
Both Denmark spinners bowled well but they really needed the
Denmark batsmen to have set a far bigger total to be really
effective. Bobby Chawla took 2 for 46 in his 10 overs;
Bashir Shah took 1 for 39 in his 9 overs.
Oman took just 29.5 overs to score the runs. This victory
has left them unbeaten in the competition so far – with only
the UAE to play. At present the top three teams look to be
Oman, UAE and hosts Namibia but there may well be the need
to resort to net run rate calculations to separate them –
depending on the remaining results. Two of these three will
contest the 1st/2nd place play-off on Saturday with the
other facing Denmark – hopefully - in the 3rd/4th place
play-off. Denmark should beat Argentina comfortably on
Friday to secure 4th place but anything is possible such is
the inconsistency that the team are showing at present.

Rawson skriver fra Namibia: Denmark back on track
Denmark put the disappointments of the first two matches
behind them today with a 21 run victory over Uganda.
Skipper Freddie Klokker lost the toss and was invited to bat
first by Ugandan skipper, Davis Arinaitwe. Openers Klokker
and Mickey Lund found the ball difficult to get away against
tight bowling from the Ugandan opening attack. Only 29 runs
had been added when Lund was caught off the bowling of
Daniel Ruyange. The experienced Carsten Pedersen came out to
join Klokker in a stand of 96 at just under 4 runs an over;
perhaps a little slow in the circumstances. After Klokker
was bowled for 65 (from 98 balls), the scoring rate slipped
still further. After 45 overs the score had crept up to 164,
way under par for this pitch. Enter the brothers Hedegaard.
Lars with 46 (from just 19 deliveries with 5 fours and 3
sixes)and Morten with 24 (from 10 deliveries with 3 fours
and 1 six) added 70 in the last 5 overs to leave Denmark
with a total of 234 for 5 in 40 overs. At least now there
was a total capable of being defended.
In the 4th over there was a very unusual incident that led
to the wrong batsman being dismissed. Opener Lawrence
Sematimba skied the ball toward Bashir Shah. While the ball
was dropping toward Bashir, the non-striker, Arthur Kyobe,
shouted ‘Drop it. Drop it’ which Bashir duly did, injuring
his moth in the process. On appeal and after discussion
between the two umpires, Arthur Kyobe was given out
‘Obstructing the field’. In most cases of Obstructing the
field it is the batsman who ‘obstructed’ who is given out
but Law 37.3 is quite clear – ‘The striker is out should
wilful obstruction or distraction by either batsman prevent
a catch being made.’. Sematimba could count himself lucky to
be still at the crease. Uganda were up with the asking rate
until the introduction of Lars Hedegaard in the 13th over.
His miserly spell yielded just 22 runs in 10 accurate overs
and after 29 overs Uganda had only reached 98 for 2 wickets.
. Two more wickets fell in the 30th over and another in the
32nd over reduced Uganda to 104 for 5 wickets. However
Uganda have a reputation for ‘batting deep’ and so it proved.
Useful knocks from Joel Olweny, Frank Nsubuga and Richard
Okia lifted Uganda to 193 for 8 after 47 overs. 41 runs
required from just 3 overs. Not impossible by any means. The
Denmark skipper then pulled off a master stroke. Whilst
everyone was expecting the re-introduction of the pace of
Henrik Hansen, skipper Freddie Klokker opted to take the
pace off the ball and entrusted slow left-armer Bashir Shah
with overs 48 and 50. Bashir proved himself more than equal
to the task picking up the wicket of Nsubuga (stumped by
Klokker for 43 from 30 deliveries) and conceding just 9
runs. The team breathed a collective sigh of relief – a
victory at last.

In today’s
other matches Oman recorded a shock 2 wicket win over
favourites and hosts Namibia for whom the in-form Gerrie
Snyman scored a massive 153 not out.
UAE completed a massive 304 run victory over minnows
Argentina. In UAE’s\massive total of 412 for 4 in 50 overs,
Mohammed Iqbal scored 78 from 64 deliveries,Arshad Ali
scored 139 from 153 deliveries, Amjad Javed scored 109 from
63 deliveries and skipper Saqib Ali smashed 41 from just 9
deliveries. Spare a thought for the Argentine bowler, Diego
Lord. His first 8 overs cost just 30 runs but his final 2
overs yielded another 53 runs!
Tomorrow Denmark face Oman at the delightfully named
Gemsbockpark, the home of United CC in a difficult match;
but one they are more than capable of winning if they play
to their full potential.

The Danmark team ultimately had another disappointing day
against the United Arab Emirates at the Centre for Cricket
Development Ground in Windhoek. This was the team’s second
match in the ICC World League – Division 2 tournament.
Captain Freddie Klokker lost the toss and was invited to bat
by the UAE captain, Saqib Ali. Danmark got off to a good
start with Freddie Klokker and Mickey Lund scoring freely at
just over 4 runs per over. After 18 overs, umpire Carl
Hurter had to leave the field with torn ligaments in his
leg; he was replaced by local umpire, Wynand Louw. Just
after the century partnership was completed Mickey Lund was
caught off the bowling of the UAE skipper. The introduction
of Arshad Ali proved decisive. Three wickets fell in his 4th
over, the 36th of the innings; Carsten Pedersen was bowled,
and both Johan Malcolm-Hansen and Lars Hedegaard were
adjudged LBW by the replacement umpire. Suddenly, Danmark
had been reduced to 164 for 5 wickets and the momentum of
the innings had been lost. None of the remaining batsmen
were able to provide support for Freddie Klokker who carried
his bat for 99 not out when Danmark were all out for 223 in
49.2 overs. On a ground with small boundaries square with
the wickets this was always going to be a difficult target
to defend; the locals felt that a ‘par’ score would be
nearer 260 or 270.
The UAE innings started at a much faster tempo; 39 coming
from the first six overs before David Borchersen bowled the
dangerous Mohammed Iqbal for 34 scored in just 21 deliveries.
The first four UAE batsmen all made important contributions
despite the regular bowling changes and the scoring rate was
maintained at around 6 runs per over. The pick of the
bowlers were spinners Bashir Shah (with 2 for 41 from 9
overs) and Johan Malcolm-Hansen (with 1 for 47 from 10
overs) but all the bowlers found it difficult to defend the
short square boundaries. The UAE innings contained 8 sixes
and 19 fours compared to the Danmark innings with just 20
fours.
The UAE passed the Danmark total with 6 wickets down with
7.5 overs remaining.
Danmark now need to win their 3 remaining group matches to
ensure a place in the play-off for 3rd and 4th places. They
now need other results to go in their favour if they are to
get into the play-off for 1st and 2nd places.
In the other matches today, Namibia amassed 345 for 5
wickets against Argentina; in their reply of 166 for 6 in 50
overs, Argentina opening batsman Matias Paterlini had the
distinction of scoring the first century of the tournament.
His undefeated 114* from 147 deliveries rightly earned him
the Man of the Match award. In the other match, a high
scoring affair between Uganda and Oman, Oman ran out winners
with few balls to spare.
Tomorrow is rest day. Hopefully Danmark will have time to
regroup and start playing to their obvious potential.

Former captain Arshad Ali

Emirates to four wickets victory over Denmark on the second
day of the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 in Windhoek,
Namibia on Sunday.
The 31-year-old medium-pacer
grabbed 7-41 as Denmark, after a 102-run opening start,
crashed out for 223 runs in 49.2 overs. The UAE achieved the
target in 42.1 overs for its second successive victory that
left its opponents still searching for a victory after two
matches.
Denmark captain Frederik
Klokker and Mickey Lund provided their team with a solid
first wicket partnership. But Ali’s introduction started the
riot as wickets fell like nine-pins.
Klokker scored a defiant 99 and
missed out on a well-deserved century only after running out
of partners. His 131-ball knock included eight boundaries.
Lund contributed 42 off 71 balls with five fours.
UAE’s successful chase was
dominated by captain Saqib Ali who scored an unbeaten 66
from 85 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Gayan Silva
scored 45.

Vores egen Chris Rawson skriver i det følgende at Danmarks
nederlag skyldtes det fremmede underlag som Namibia
udnyttede lang bedre. Et underlag som var hurtigt og med
kraftig opspring og som vore spillere ikke har været udsat
for før.:
"Danmark went into their opening match in the ICC World
Cricket League - Division 2 tournament in Windhoek, Namibia
with high expectations. Their training here had gone very
well under the expert eyes of Peter Palle Klokker and Neil
Foster and they were on a 6 match winning streak. They had
the misfortune to meet the in-form hosts, Namibia, in
conditions that were quite alien to them at the Wanderers
Club today.
Freddie Klokker won the toss and had little hesitation in
electing to bat first. The tall strongly built Namibian
opening bowlers found conditions very much to their liking.
The pitch proved to be very fast and very bouncy – with
balls regularly bouncing to shoulder height from just short
of a good length. Michael Pedersen, who has much experience
of playing on fast pitches in Australia, later described it
as the fastest pitch he had ever encountered. Wickets fell
regularly and Danmark found themselves at 40 for 6 wickets
after 20 overs. Things did not improve much and they were
all out for 77 in 29.1 overs. Extras were the highest scorer
with 18 followed by David Borchersen with 13 from 16
deliveries.
Reducing Namibia to 6 for 2 in the 3rd over gave Danmark
some hope but the bowlers failed to find the same good
length as the opposition in the face of a brutal assault by
Gerry Snyman whose undefeated 60 came from just 30
deliveries with 2 sixes and 11 fours. It took Namibia just
11.5 overs to pass the Danmark total.
Speaking after the match, coach Neil Foster said that our
batsman had found great difficulty in adjusting to the pitch
and that the bowlers had failed to hit the same good length
as their counterparts. He remained very optimistic for the
remaining matches in the tournament. The pitches on the two
other grounds used in the competition had not proved to be
as quick or as bouncy as that at the Wanderers.
In the other matches today, UAE easily overcame a modest
Uganda total, a match in which Danish umpire, Niels Bagh
officiated, and newly promoted Argentina failed by just 18
runs to chase down the Oman score of 269".

Fra ICC skrives følgende fra dagens kamp mellem Namibia og
Danmark hvor kampen beskrives som "envejs trafik":
"Game two of the ICC World Cricket League Division Two 2007
was virtually one way traffic right through the encounter.
Denmark captain Freddie Klokker won the toss and elected to
bat first at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
Namibia won the match by 8 wickets and claimed two valuable
points to lead the points tally. Gerrie Snyman (1/28 & 60
not out) was declared man-of-the-match for a quick fire
half-century and his all-round performance. Denmark would
hope to display a better staging during its next encounter
against UAE tomorrow.
Denmark was bundled out for a mediocre 77 from a little less
than thirty overs, courtesy of a scintillating spell of fast
bowling from Ian van Zyl, who claimed four wickets and
conceded only 17 runs.
Louis Klazinga (3/11) and Kola Burger (2/15) combined for
five more wickets and were ably supported by Gerrie Snyman
(1/28).
On a forgettable day for the Denmark team, only two of their
batsmen managed to reach double figures. The Namibians’
run-chase was executed in style – the African team achieved
the target within 12 overs and lost only two wickets."
